Children of God

Few years ago, before I accepted Christ as my Lord and Saviour, I taught that since my parents are children of God, I am automatically a child of God. Until I saw the need to accept the Lord personally, I did not have a relationship with Him. Surprisingly, this happens to many children of Christians. Most parents are not conscious in leading their children to the Lord and the children end up leaving the faith. One of the things I discovered early in my relationship with God is the fact that God has given humanity the opportunity to make decisions. Certainly, He has given us His Holy Spirit to help in our weaknesses but the Holy Spirit is given to those who have received Him as their saviour. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. (John 1:12) Our sonship in God is not based on a biological descent but on the will of God. John 1:12 admonishes us that, all who did receive Him (Jesus), to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God. Thus, our sonship is given based on receiving and believing in the name of the Lord Jesus. Romans 10:9-10 shares the same view; “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” It is not enough going to church, neither is it enough being a child of a believer. What is your own conviction? Celebrating Christian events such as Christmas, Easter, Ascension Day etc. does not make you a child of God. Have you received the Lord already? If Jesus returns now, will He call you a good and faithful servant? What steps have you put in place to introduce your children to the Lord? The reason most Christians have children who do not believe in the Lord is because there were no conscious attempts to disciple the children. The fact that the children follow us to church always does not mean they are saved. Be careful not to miss this. God wants all men saved (1 Tim. 2:4) and the devil is always roaring like a lion looking for someone to devour (1 Pet. 5:8). There is a battle for souls and we should not forget that. Read this related post. If you have not accepted and received Jesus Christ as your Lord and Saviour, please pray this prayer: Dear God, today, I declare that “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in my heart that God raised him from the dead. I accept Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. Forgive me all my sins and may Your Spirit constantly change me to the full image of Christ. Thank You Jesus for dying to set me free. Amen.
