Christlikeness: Chosen to share in God’s inheritance

Every manufacturer has a goal and a purpose for creating new products. Some products are limited edition and will most likely not have subsequent reproduction. Other products get upgraded every year with the latest features. In the same way, God had a purpose for creating humans. This purpose was decided on before the foundation of the earth was laid. As we have discussed over the past few days, God created humans to be like Christ. Of course God was unaware of Lucifer’s plans and as such the lamb of God was slain before the foundation of the earth (Rev. 13:3). The KJV version quote Ephesians 1:11 below:

in whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will.

Believers have been chosen to participate in God’s inheritance. This heavenly inheritance is reflected in the riches of God’s glory which is shared with us. “And if [we are His] children, [then we are His] heirs also: heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ [sharing His spiritual blessing and inheritance], if indeed we share in His suffering so that we may also share in His glory (Rom. 8:17 AMP). This predestination was by God’s eternal will and not man’s decision. It reflects the sovereignty and power of God to share His glory with us.

Knowing that we have been chosen to share in God’s inheritance should influence our mindset and way of life. The children of billionaires who live careless lives stand the risk of losing all riches bequeathed to them. In the same way, knowing that we have obtained an eternal inheritance should influence our way of life. We live with an eternity mindset. The children of Israel were given land as their inheritance and years after they received their portion, they lost most of it because of their sinful way of life. We received an eternal inheritance not made by human hands but made by God. This inheritance is imperishable, and after our mortal bodies move into glory, we shall be given imperishable bodies.

Our lives, attitude, faith, hope, trust, strength, weaknesses, obedience should all be subjected to God’s Lordship. May we reflect on this today as we bring everything under God’s control knowing that we have been called to share in God’s inheritance.
