Christlikeness: Reflecting the selfless humility of Christ

I saw a skit few years ago. A young man went to the church and met a couple of people cleaning the church. He saw one particular lady who was busily scrubbing the floor. After the man was done with what he went to do at the church, he saw this lady preparing to go home. This man “out of pity” for this “poor lady” (so he thought) decided to offer her a ride back home. After a short conversation with the lady, the man realised that she was financially stable and owned a plush car as compared to the man’s old car. One lesson the man learnt was to be humble. He looked down on the lady just because he didn’t even know who she was and concluded that she is a poor person. Have this same attitude in yourselves which was in Christ Jesus [look to Him as your example in selfless humility] (Philippians 2:5 AMP) I have heard of people bragging about their achievements, awards, qualifications, wealth, etc. I am not against anyone showing off to the world what they have achieved, but this should be done in humility. As we identified in our previous post, to be Christlike demands humility. Paul put it this way, Have this same attitude in yourselves which was in Christ Jesus [look to Him as your example in selfless humility] (Philippians 2:5 AMP). Imagine the Creator of the world (Gen.1:1-3; John 1:1-3) stopping so low as to be born in a manger. He did not choose the palace, nor rich parents. Therefore no one has any excuse about the difficulty in relating to Christ humility. The high and low, rich and poor, royal birth and servant-birth etc can all look to Jesus as our perfect example of humility. Therefore we are encouraged to “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit [through factional motives, or strife], but with [an attitude of] humility [being neither arrogant nor self-righteous], regard others as more important than yourselves. Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others (Philippians 2:3‭-‬4). Humility is not low self-esteem or belittling oneself. It is an attitude of service with love and considering others with love as well. Christlikeness without looking unto Jesus as our example of selfless humility is no Christlikeness at all. With this mindset let us consider ways we can develop Christ’s humility: A personal dedication to imitate Christ’s humility Fasting Choose your companions wisely (walk with the humble) Move away from the things that lead to pride. Remember, having Christ’s attitude of humility is the life that pleases the Father. To know more about humility, I recommend our book on Humility to you. Am I Humble?
