When one enrolls as an apprentice of another person, it is expected that at the end of the training, the fully trained apprentice will have the skillset of the teacher. In the same way, at the end of a concentrated study such as a PhD, the student is fully trained in the chosen field and most times reflects the expertise of the supervisor. To be like the teacher doesn’t come in a day. The learner has to put in efforts to learn and to be able to replicate the acquired knowledge. This is similar to our Christian experience. When we come to Christ, we have Jesus as our standard and ultimately aim to be like Him. The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.(Luke 6:40) Jesus is our perfect teacher and has become our permanent role model. The truth is, the priority of God for every believer is to be like Christ. We cannot be students of Jesus and be trained like another. It is not possible… If we cannot be trained like Jesus, then we were no students of His. To be a student of Jesus goes beyond going to church. It is a lifetime service to be like Christ. It is a mindset that reflects in our way of life. This way of life is not automatically given when we accept Jesus. We have to consciously live it. Unfortunately, the devil is aware that Christlikeness is God’s priority and has put roadblocks to prevent us from being like our teacher. Scripture has given us enough details of how to become like Christ. Accepting Jesus as your Lord and Saviour is the first step. There is also the need for discipleship and training. Unfortunately, the church has the highest record of abandoned babies. When people come to faith, we should have a structured plan to disciple them. We do this by training and teaching the basic and the matured teachings of the Gospel. We hold the hands of new converts and teach them like the way a new apprentice or student is taught. At every step of the way, we have to prayerfully commit this new convert in the hands of God. We shall consider other ways to achieve Christlikeness in our next posts. Remember, Christlikeness is God’s priority for us. Dear God, thank You for setting the standard right. All we want to be now, is to reflect Christ. Help is to be able to grow up into that measure in Jesus’ name. Amen
