Christlikeness: Walk just as He walked

We have considered different verses in the past few days that reiterate our call to Christlikeness. Until we fully understand that we have been called to be like Christ, we might find it difficult to live like Him. John the Apostle wrote that “He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked” (I John 2:6 NKJV). This verse implies that if you declare a personal relationship with Jesus (accepting Him as your Lord and Saviour) and have a daily fellowship with Him, you daily imitate Christ. This imitation is not just a merely outward dressing, it is a way of life, an attitude, a way of attaining Christ’s perfection, a call to a fullness of life in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked (I John 2:6 NKJV) Therefore if any person comes to Christ, that person becomes a new creation and the old way of life passes away and the person attains a new life. This paraphrase from 2 Corinthians 5:17 is a clear depiction of our new state in Christ. For example, when someone joins a fitness class, it ultimately affects what that person eats and the person’s approach to bodily exercise. Imagine enrolling in a fitness class and refusing to follow the rules pertaining to eating and exercises. While your colleagues are getting value for their money and time, you will still be in the same old state. This is exactly what happens if a believer refuses to walk as Jesus did! We don’t need a 1st century dress code to walk like Jesus Christ did. John elaborate this as: “We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys his word, love for God is truly made complete in them. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must live as Jesus did” (1 John 2:3‭-‬6 NIV). The Bible is our manual for living and as Jesus said, heaven and earth will pass away but His word will not. Fortunately for us, the Bible has been made so much available that if you have access to a smartphone, you can download different versions onto it. Is there an excuse for us not to walk as Jesus did? If you are not sure where to start from, begin with the four gospels… Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Be friends with people who have Christ-mindset. Get in touch with us if you require help in understanding scripture. May God help us all even as we commit to be like Christ.
