Forgive them and set yourself free!

The bond between family members is the closest interpersonal human relationship. Growing up, I used to hear quotes such as “blood is thicker than water”. No matter the experience from family, you cannot change your DNA. Until we learn to restore family relationships, the world will still face the unfortunate consequences of broken homes. Since the family is the closest depiction of our relationship with God, we have also seen countless attempts by the enemy to cause disunity within families. Imagine being sold by your own brothers to become a slave. Joseph’s own brothers wanted to get rid of him because they hated him. In fact, I heard such stories of parents giving up their children for child labour so the parents can make money from the children. So sad! You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.(Genesis 50:20) Anyone who has experienced abuse, hatred, family feud, destitute etc. as a result of an action by a family member will testify that the experience is horrible. Many children grow up as adults with nothing but intense hatred towards some family members. If care is not taken, these people will for the rest of their lives be cut off from the family member(s) who harmed them. Recently, I saw a story of a boy who had his fingers chopped off by his parents. Such wickedness! To ask people who have suffered abuse from family members to forgive and restore the relationship can be very difficult. If the scar of the abuse is visible, it makes it extremely difficult to let go. Today, I send a humble appeal to all those who have been wrongly treated by members of their own families. I pray for God to strengthen you and grant you the ability to be able to forgive and restore relationships. Of course some relationships will never be restored (e.g. divorce), but find it within your heart to forgive those who have done such evil to you. Joseph went through a similar predicament and years later, he told his brothers that “you intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives.” Even if you do not see any positive side of your life at the moment, know that you still have a story to share to encourage others. Your determination, resilience and strength in those times have paid off. Shake off the pain, forgive the offenders, and let God be your comfort. If it feels like you are unloved by men, know that God loves you with an everlasting love. Forgive your offenders and set yourself free from the burden of hatred. Let us restore family relationships and keep hope alive. Shalom!
