Give, and it will be given to you

As we continue our conversation kingdom mindset about money,  it is important to encourage one another into doing good with our resources. God wants all His children to be generous to one another. He expects us to reach out to those in need and assist them. Instead of being judgemental about people for their financial state, we can rather give unto them. It is easier for us to condemn one another than to be a blessing to each other. There are people in the church and the communities we live in who are in need of financial assistance. As believers,  we have the Abrahamic blessing: we are blessed. What should be our attitude towards giving? Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”(Luke 6:38) Yesterday we saw that we should be cheerful givers. Today Jesus is admonishing us that giving is bidirectional: “Give, and it will be given to you.” What goes out of us, will always be restored. But the restoration is multiplied: “A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.” There is an overflow for the restoration. What we receive back is dependent on how we ‘measured’ our giving: “For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” This measure is in terms of quantity and quality. If you give cheerfully, the measure you receive back is a cheerful measure and if you give miserly, you receive a similar measure back. Remember, God knows our hearts and He sees the intent of the heart. The poor widow in Mark 12:42 gave a significant measure out of her poverty and she was praised for it. Jesus expects us to be generous believers; generosity should be our way of life. We should intentionally be generous in money  and also in things that cannot be quantified with money. We should be generous in mercy, love, compassion, forgiveness etc. These virtues will enable us to use our resources to bless others.  Until you identify with the needs of your brother and become compassionate towards a friend, any act of help might not stem from a cheerful heart. Further, know that when we give, we begin a ripple effect: we shall receive back in higher measures.  Remember that this principle of giving is a universal principle. If believers refuse to give, we make room for the generous unbeliever to remain blessed. Be intentional about giving because God wants you to give!
