The weight of sin, the troubles of the world and the desire to live a better life can compound to a burden that makes one weary and tired. The fruitlessness of trying to take this weariness and the burden of sin and guilt away by our efforts is man’s lot. It seems like nothing brings satisfaction. Work, pleasure, romantic love, wealth, children and many more desires of our hearts do not take away weariness. The more we work hard, the more we identify the need to work more. The richest people in the world do have a permanent holiday. They still have systems in place to ensure that their wealth is reproducing more returns. We can put our hearts in different ventures, different places, different ways, different people, different healthy choices etc. but none of these can give us permanent cure to weariness and take away our burdens. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28) The fact that by our own efforts, we are unable to access a domain that gives us permanent rest from our toil and labour does not mean we cannot have rest. The world and the things that are in it can produce a cycle of toil that can deny one rest. Imagine a world riddled with pandemic, economic hardships, broken relationships, broken families and wars. It seems like a cycle of pain and weariness. Our best efforts yield less and we still have to carry all this pain and discomfort with us wherever we go. Our laborious toils could lead to sleeplessness and sickness. We are in a generation where many people require medical help to sleep. Taking sleeping pills has become the new normal. Where do we find rest? Jesus is calling us: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). He has extended a hand of invitation to everyone, He calls us to come to Him for the much needed rest. His invitation is open to all and we accept this by faith. He is calling us to let go of the pain and weariness of trying to fix ourselves. Jesus is calling us to an arena of inner rest and satisfaction. He is calling us to a season of rest. He is ready to take away what weighs us down and give us divine rest from all our troubles. He is calling us to let go and let Him take charge. To find rest in Him, He invites us to do the following: “Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:29-30). When we take the yoke of Jesus, we rid ourselves from the vanity of toils that our fruitlessness brings. When we labour without Jesus, we continue the cycle of self gratification and sin. However, when we turn our eyes unto Jesus and commit our ways to Him, the things of the world, the pain, the discomfort, the craving become very dim in the light of Jesus’ glory. Let us go to Jesus and our rest is assured!
