Growing up in Ghana, we had to get used to load shedding of electricity. The national grid which could have served the whole nation was not providing enough electricity based on issues I never understood as a child. On days that we had our electricity taken off, most people in my community had rechargeable lambs and few rich ones had mini generators that powered their homes. As soon as the electricity is restored, there is a loud shout of joy as children scream, “the lights have been restored”. It’s been a while since I traveled to Ghana but I am aware that there is still load shedding of electricity and I am sure the children still scream at the restoration of light. When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”(John 8:12) Light is good and as we saw the other time, God’s word is light. Jesus said, in John 8:12 that “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” In John 1:1 the scripture says that “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” Who is the Word? This is explained in the subsequent verses; “He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it” (John 1:2-5). Jesus is the Word. Jesus is the light of the world. Jesus is not sporadic like the electricity in Ghana. He is more than able to shine His light (illumination) on the whole world. He doesn’t turn on and off whenever He likes. Jesus’ light is permanently on in the day and in the night. In Ghana we use the term “Dumso” meaning off and on to describe the state of the electricity. Jesus’ light shines all day, all night and all year long. This light brings understanding, revelation, guidance, safety, security, protection, insight etc. Why not try Jesus? Do you have a relationship with Him? Is He the Lord of your life? Have you committed your ways to him? Everyone around you can live in darkness (sin) but with the light you have, you should be able to live in the light and take the people from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of light. Shine in your world!
