Kingdom money principles: You cannot serve both God and money.

Have you ever stressed about the state of your finances? I think one thing that stresses me most is my financial condition.  Sometimes, I get so stressed about it that I don’t want to even talk about it.  Does God want us to stress about money? Definitely No! In this new series, we shall consider some biblical principles about money and learn the kingdom mindset about money. I grew up in a middle income family and as a child, I desired to live a life that is better than that of my parents. In fact, I was encouraged by my parents to go to school and attain academic laurels because they considered their low academic background as the cause of their financial status. Although money is good, without the right approach to understanding the dynamics of it, you might end up living “just to make money”.

“No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money. (Matthew 6:24)

Jesus is aware of our need for “things” and money gives the freedom to have these  “things”. However  without the right understanding of how to manage money, money will end up managing us! What does Jesus say about serving money? According to Jesus, “no one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or  will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24). If we don’t get the right principle towards money, we will end up serving money for the rest of our lives. Guess what? Money can really order you around. It can make you wake up at dawn and sleep at dusk. It can take all your time that even spending time with God becomes impossible.

The first experience I want to share with you is that if your desire for money is not managed with godly principles, you will end up serving money. No one can serve two masters and give them equal attention. One will be preferred over the other. Jesus’ solution to this is,“Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own” (Matthew 6:25‭, ‬27‭, ‬31‭, 33-34).

Make a checklist of the things that cause you to be stressed out. If they are all related to money, do not worry but follow this exciting journey about kingdom money principles and let us save ourselves from the stresses of money. God bless you.
