When one experiences an encounter that is mind-blowing, the person does not remain the same. Mary the mother of Jesus, experienced an angelic encounter that propelled her into her assignment on earth. The Most High God chose Mary for a task that has permanently transformed the world. Mary was humbled and yet as young as she was, she knew that this task will be known throughout generations. She visited her cousin Elizabeth who had also received her miracle baby. The two women carrying prophetic babies met and the voice of Mary caused Elizabeth's unborn baby to leap in joy. Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit proclaimed this about Mary, “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the child you will bear!" (Luke 1:42).
And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord. (Luke 1:46)
Mary's heart was so full and she burst out into a song. This song known as Mary's Psalm or the Magnificat is a hymn of praise to God. This song is recorded in Luke 1:46-55:
"And Mary said: “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant. From now on all generations will call me blessed, for the Mighty One has done great things for me— holy is his name. His mercy extends to those who fear him, from generation to generation. He has performed mighty deeds with his arm; he has scattered those who are proud in their inmost thoughts. He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. He has filled the hungry with good things but has sent the rich away empty. He has helped his servant Israel, remembering to be merciful to Abraham and his descendants forever, just as he promised our ancestors.”
(Luke 1:46-55).
Mary's worship was from within (soul and spirit) and without (her song of praise). She identified her lowly state and how this assignment will make her name transcend to all generations. Indeed she knew that she would be considered the most blessed among women. To Mary, God's mercy and mighty deeds are seen in this miracle of virgin birth. Mary identified that God is able to bring down rulers and lift the humble. God's provision to the hungry is also mentioned. Finally, Mary attributed the miracle of a Saviour to the fulfillment of God's promise to Israel. The young woman who prior to the visit of angel Gabriel was only known to family and friends is now the world's most popular woman. Whether you believe in the Christian faith or not, you cannot miss that Christmas is just about the story of the birth of Jesus, born by Mary. One young woman's labour experience has given the world global celebration.
Many young people are like Mary: barely known, trying to live for God, and keeping up with the challenges of life. Let it be known to everyone trying to live for God that it is worth it. Your patient endurance will pay off. Yes, purity is still rewarded. Don't let anyone deceive you. If you don’t give up, God will give you a new song.
