Pentecost: But you will receive power!

Whenever I make a prayer request, my first expectation is for God to say “Yes” to my requests. However, I forget that “Yes”, “No” and “Wait” are answers we can receive from God. After the resurrection of Jesus, He showed Himself to the disciples for forty days and told them about the kingdom of God (Acts 1:3). Luke records that “on one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”(Acts 1:4‭). But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”(Acts 1:8). The disciples were anxious for Jesus to begin His reign. They were expecting Him to be the Messiah who will deliver them from Roman rule. “Then they gathered around him and asked him, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” He said to them: “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”(Acts 1:6‭-‬8). I believe the disciples were expecting Jesus to reply: “Yes! I will restore the kingdom to Israel.” However, Jesus said, “It is not for you to know.” He said: No! But you will receive power! The disciples were looking forward to following Messiah Jesus to conquer the Romans. But Jesus said, No! It is not about the Romans, you need power to witness me to the whole world.  The disciples were waiting for the power in the upper room. They committed themselves to praying because Jesus gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about.”(Acts 1:4). “When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.” (Acts 2:1‭-‬4). On that same day, Peter who denied Jesus in the presence of a servant girl (at the trial of Jesus) stood up boldly in the power of the Holy Spirit and delivered the first Gospel sermon after the baptism of the Holy Spirit. “Those who accepted his message were baptized, and about three thousand were added to their number that day.” (Acts 2:41). The power of the Holy Spirit can cause any available and thirsty vessel to operate in the supernatural power of God. Long for Him, desire Him, invite Him and wait until He fills you up to the overflow.  Have a blessed Pentecost day.
