Raising a godly home involves all hands on deck. None is too old to be ignored and none is too little to be forgotten. Sometimes we tend to focus on ourselves so much that we forget others who are part of our lives. Children are mostly forgotten when it comes to understanding spiritual things. At home, parents barely involve the children in their spiritual lives. Majority of the spiritual upbringing is left to the Sunday School Department at church and in most cases, the Sunday School Department is seen as a place to keep children so they do not disturb the adult service. Sunday School teachers invest spiritual virtues that most parents take for granted, yet most churches do not invest in training and equipping the teachers. If we are not intentional in the spiritual growth of our children, we leave them to wander through the ever confusing world without spiritual guidance. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.” (Matthew 19:14) As we saw in our previous post, we need to train the child the way they should start so that they hold fast to that way when they are old. Spirituality is also very important to children. Currently, there is so much information out there and children are exposed to many evil movements. Parents, guardians and caretakers need to take a stand for Jesus before losing the children to the devil. In Matthew 19, parents brought their children to Jesus for Him to bless them and the disciples tried to stop them. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these” (Matthew 19:14). Jesus admonishes us to take the children to Him. We should not leave them behind. We should involve them in our spiritual journey to knowing Christ. We should explain scriptures to them. We should teach them to pray. We should be intentional about investing faith in them. As a parent, sometimes I get overwhelmed by how to get extremely active children to sit and listen to the word of God. Sometimes I wonder which approach will be the best. However, children are not adults and they may require extra time, extra patience, extra love, extra effort to be involved in the family devotions. We should not give up when they seem not to be interested. As soon as we give up on them, the devil is at the door with his sickle to pull them to the wrong places. When we understand the heart of Jesus towards children, we will be dedicated to taking the children to Jesus. It is not too early to start telling them about Jesus. When we see other young adults actively involved in ministry, we should know that someone took them to Jesus as children. Sometimes, we should reach out to such parents for guidance and support. Remember, the heart of the child is precious to God. No child is too naughty to be left out. Santa Claus might refuse to give gifts to naughty children but Jesus welcomes every child. Even the very child who sits at the naughty corner each day is loved by Jesus. Take the children to Jesus!
