The baby in the basket

In times of distress, pregnant women and mother’s (and kids) are more vulnerable. We have seen from war images how pregnant women and babies become so malnourished and pale. Imagine having a child in a moment of confusion, distress and strife. Exactly a year ago, I gave birth to my second daughter in the peak of a national lockdown. In fact, we had to search for someone to take care of our 1st daughter because the hospital will not allow her in. I also needed a birth attendant considering the nature of birth I had to go through. COVID-19 is not a military attack, yet its impacts on family life will forever be remembered. But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. (Exodus 2:3) Moses was born in strange times. The Egyptian Pharaoh had made it a law for all Hebrew sons to be drowned in the Nile River. Moses’ parents hid him for some time until it was difficult to hide him any longer. As a mum, I totally understand how Jachobed (Moses’ Mom) felt as she laid her son in the tar coated basket to float on the reeds of the Nile. God being so good, Pharaoh’s daughter happened to be at the river at the same time. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said (Exodus 2:6). At the end of the day, Moses ended up growing up in the Palace of the man who had sought to kill him (including all Hebrew boys) as a prince of Egypt. Moses’ story is no ordinary story. God used the oppressor to change the life of one boy. This baby grew up and became an agent of redemption for the people of God. As we ponder about this, know that there are some bad situations that are triggers to your elevation. Don’t be satisfied at the bottom, make sure that you draw near to God in the very bad times. Do not forget that God’s eyes are on all His children. He will surely send your redeemer if you do not give up. As Moses was drawn from the water as a Prince, God uses that helpless baby to save Israel. As I carried my baby knowing that we will be on our own for a while, God surprised us the next day with an answer to a prayer we have prayed for several months. God still speaks even in the loneliest times. Be attentive to His voice. Today, if you have hit rock bottom, don’t be comfortable staying there. We are in the 11th hour. Everything is possible for those who believe. Trust in the Lord and believe that with God all things are possible.
