The belt of truth

Paul exhorted the Church in Ephesus to put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, they may be able to stand their ground, and after they have done everything, to stand (Ephesians 6:13). The first armour Paul mentioned is the belt of truth. In the armory of the soldier, the belt holds all other parts together and therefore significant that Paul mentioned it first. What does Paul mean by the belt of truth? This literally means sincerity, transparency or absolutely truthfulness. We do not need to have the type of Christianity that is outwardly fanciful but inwardly far away from what we see. Truth is truth. There is no middle point between truth and lies. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist (Ephesians 6:14a) The belt of truth will hold together every other armour in the right place. When we have the right understanding of our faith, we do not follow worldly patterns that do not meet God’s standards. No soldier goes to a battle with a false reality. The soldier is aware of the truth of the battle and that any mistake on the part of the soldier can lead to fatality. Those who fight based on a false reality are considered to have been brainwashed. Christianity is not brainwashing! The belt of truth is for both defence and offence. The knowledge of the absolute truth will defend you from the devil’s liars and truth also sets the believer free. Jesus overcame His temptation because He was aware of the truth. Christians are expected to stand firm and put on the belt of truth. There are many false realities that we see and encounter each day. Religious conventionalism has reduced the truth to just an option. Until we lay hold of what we truly believe and confidently girdle it around our waist, every other part of our armoury falls apart. The reality is, we are in a battle. The battle between light and darkness is not fought with guns and missiles. It is fought with spiritual weapons and the belt of truth is a significant weapon we need to overcome. I pray that God gives us the grace to know the truth and to daily have the truth around our waist. Which belt do you have now?
