The arrival of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost was an eventful one. “When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?” (Acts 2:6-8). The people in the upper room who received the Holy Spirit baptism spoke in languages they did not even know. It might have been an interesting sight for people from different nationalities to all hear the disciples speaking in their languages.
we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” (Acts 2:11b)
What were the disciples who have been filled with the Holy Spirit saying in all these different languages? They were declaring the wonders of God (Acts 2:11). The Holy Spirit baptism gave an overflow of worship. These God fearing Jews who had gathered in Jerusalem were amazed by the total worship and the deep declaration of the wonders of God. I can imagine the wonder on the faces of the visitors. “Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean? Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.” (Acts 2:12-13)
Even today, the presence of the Holy Spirit and His baptism is received with different reactions. While others are cut to the heart, for some, it makes no sense. The Holy Spirit baptism leads to a deeper intimacy with God. He leads us in worship and reveals deep things about God to us. The arrival of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost day brought a new love relationship between the church and God. “Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved” (Acts 2:46-47).
Prayer: Dear Holy Spirit, thank You for Your presence in my life. Increase in me a deeper love for God that I may declare His wonders to all the earth. In Jesus name I pray. Amen.
