So far, all the armoury mentioned have been defensive armoury. Paul goes on further to tell the Ephesian church that they need to have the sword of the Spirit. A sword is an offensive weapon. Thus, in our battle with the kingdom of darkness, the sword of the Spirit is an offensive weapon we use to fight the enemy. What is the sword of the Spirit? Paul explains that the sword of the Spirit is the word of God. How can the word of God be a sword? The writer of the book of Hebrew confirms that; “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12). the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.(Ephesians 6:17b) The word of God is the sword that both judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart and it is also an offensive weapon of the believer. Therefore, if we attack, we do so based on the word of God. How can you attack if you do not have the word of God in you? In John 1:1, the author reveals that; “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God”. Then we are made aware that the Lord Jesus is the Word of God. Imagine fighting the devil and your sword is Jesus Christ… your guess is good as mine. Jesus already defeated the devil on the cross. Therefore when our weapon is the word of God, we stand on the truth of God’s word and we claim the victory that was won on the cross of Calvary. Jesus told His disciples that; “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away” (Matthew 24:35). The Psalmist discovered the everlasting nature of God’s word and proclaimed; “Forever, oh Lord, thy word is settled in Heaven” (Psalm 119:89). Our offensive attack is not based on what God can do, it is based on WHAT GOD HAS DONE! Therefore, the battle lines are defined even before we start. The devil is aware of this and tries to attack the believer’s faith, conviction, assurance, intent, destination etc. That is the reason the other defensive armoury are very important. We need those to hold on fast to what we believe. Then with the sword, we destroy and pull down every stronghold of the enemy. No soldier goes to the battle with just the defensive armoury. The offensive is needed to strike down the enemy. As believers, the word of God is our offensive weapon. The word is the Lord Jesus Christ. He has already won the victory for us. We enter this battle with a Victor mentality not a victim mentality. The devil is defeated foe and the word of God clearly states that. The devil is aware of his final destination and wants to take as many as possible along with him. Do not be deceived!
