WHAT JESUS TAUGHT CONCERNING SWEARING AN OATH

As we continue our discussion on the teachings of Jesus, we shall focus on what Jesus said concerning swearing an oath taking in this post.

Matthew 5:33-37 “Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

In this passage, our Lord Jesus speaks on swearing and taking an oath. Even though it is often not the norm to begin a discussion with a concluding statement before the main lessons, let us start with a conclusion statement as this might make things clearer. Here is the concluding statement.

DO NOT SWEAR AT ALL. JUST SIMPLY SAY YES IS YOU MEAN YES AND NO IF YOU MEAN NO. DO NOT GO ON TO SWEAR TO PROVE A POINT.

Often when we are confronted with an issue, we may be tempted to swear, take an oath and do all sorts of things to prove a point. Absolutely no need doing so.

Jesus completely forbids swear by anything. God does not lead us to swear in doing anything, but Satan does. So be careful wherever you are tempted to swear.
